Cornell University's International Gateway

Weill Medical College

Weill Medical College has been a leader in International Medical Education among medical schools in the United States. We are one of the few medical schools to have created an endowment program to support medical student educational experiences abroad, both in developing and developed countries. We have affiliation agreements with a select group of medical schools and hospitals around the world, and the medical college has developed research collaborations in several countries, notably in Haiti and Brazil. Weill Cornell was also among the founding members of the International Health Medical Education Consortium, an international group of medical colleges committed to global education, research, and service.

The medical college’s Office of International Medical Education (OIME) was created by Dean Antonio M. Gotto, Jr. in 2000 to oversee and administer the medical college’s international medical education program. Since its creation, the OIME has expanded the scope and breadth of Weill Cornell’s international education program. An increasing number of medical school students take an international elective between their 1st and 2nd years or in their 4th year. Furthermore, the OIME’s program for visiting international students has grown significantly over the past few years. This program allows medical students from all over the world to take electives at Weill-Cornell and its affiliates.

"Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar is the first branch of an American medical school ever established overseas."

Weill Cornell has expanded the number of international programs available to the medical students. In particular, the medical school has medical student exchange programs with several countries: The United States-European Union Medical Educational Exchange (US-EU MEE) program partners are with medical schools in Denmark, Germany, and England. The Max Kade Foundation program enables our medical students to do an elective in Vienna, Austria. The Weill Cornell-University of Sydney exchange program enables our students to obtain both an urban and a rural clinical experience in Australia. The Klinikum rechts der Isar/Technischen Universitat (Germany) exchange program involves both student and faculty exchanges.

The medical school has International Affiliation Agreements with several institutions around the world, including the American Hospital of Paris (France), the American Hospital in Istanbul (Turkey), Hallym University Medical Center (South Korea), and the recently established affiliation with the Bugando Medical School in Tanzania.

The medical college’s reputation as a medical school with an international scope has been solidified by the creation of a branch campus in Qatar in the Arabian Gulf region. By means of sharing faculty, using teleconferencing, fostering collaboration between course directors, Weill Cornell is establishing a unique transnational program in medical education.
