School of Industrial and Labor Relations
The School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) was founded "to improve industrial and labor conditions in the State through the provision of instruction, the conduct of research, and the dissemination of information in all aspects of industrial, labor, and public relations, affecting employers and employees." Today, this core mission extends far beyond New York State. ILR's research, teaching, and extension activities reach out to employers, workers, students, policymakers, and researchers around the world. ILR International Programs role is to support these international activities and to promote new opportunities with the aim of further expanding ILR's international presence.
Activities include:
- Promotion of international research and exchange
- Expansion of opportunities for students' international education
- Development of international conferences and seminars
- Publicity for international activities at ILR
- Dissemination of faculty and international research
- Administration of ILR Visiting Fellow Program
International Internships
Institutional partnerships with the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) International Institute for Labour Studies (Geneva) and the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Dublin) facilitate placement of undergraduate interns who earn ILR credit during their internships.
Student "International Experience" Grants
A new grant competition aimed at facilitating international research and volunteer opportunities for ILR graduate and undergraduate students began in Spring 2005. Undergraduate and graduate students were awarded grants to assist with their research and travel to China, Germany, Nicaragua, Spain, and Tanzania. Our hope is to fund several international experience grants each semester.
Internationalizing the ILR Curriculum
ILR’s International Graduate Students’ Association (IGSA) has proposed an International Concentration for MILR students designed to enhance international/global perspectives in the curriculum. The IP faculty committee is working with MILR students and the International and Comparative Labor Department in addressing the request and a proposal for an International Concentration for MILR's is being reviewed by the Graduate Studies Director and Committee.
Visiting Fellows
ILR welcomes some 15 to 20 international Visiting Fellows from around the world each year. Visitors from Argentina, Israel, Italy, Korea, Turkey, Ukraine, and many other countries offer students and faculty a wide range of experience and perspectives and bring a valued international dimension to the school.
Future Plans and Strategic Goals
Future activities include: 1) strengthening ties with ILR international alumni, 2) expanding international curriculum/education offerings, 3) improving integration of extension-resident international information and collaboration, 4) and promoting exchange opportunities with international institutional partners among students and faculty, among others.

ILR Community Grant

ILR International Programs (IP) is pleased to announce a small grant program for members of the ILR community (faculty, extension associates, staff, and students) for international activities. This program is not intended to be used to fund individual research or travel. Rather, it is designed to help provide funding for international activities that involve MULTIPLE constituents of the ILR School (faculty, students, alumni, labor, management, governments), while simultaneously raising ILR's international profile. IP will set aside a maximum of $12,000 per year to fund one or two (at most) proposals prepared by the ILR community.
One condition of this program is that recipients commit to some sort of "public" deliverable (e.g., prepare reports or provide abstracts of papers from conferences that can be shared publicly on this ILR website). The specific "deliverable" in each case will be negotiated by the recipient of the grant and the IP faculty committee.

The ILR International Credit Internship Program
For most of its history the ILR Credit Internship Program operated almost exclusively within the United States. In recent years, however, we have sought to expand its scope in attempt to offer our students unique opportunities to experience industrial and labor relations in an international setting.
The ILR School established a unique partnership with the International Labour Organization in Geneva, Switzerland several years ago. We now routinely place students in the various offices, agencies and departments of the ILO, including recent placements in Nairobi, Kenya and Beijing, China. Other opportunities exist with ILO offices in Cairo, Egypt, Bangkok, Thailand, and other select locations.
