Cornell University's International Gateway

Languages

The FALCON program offers intensive Chinese or Japanese

Cornell has a prominent tradition in language teaching of innovation, organization, breadth and dedication. Languages are taught in nine departments and units, all in the College of Arts and Sciences:

  • Africana Studies and Research Center
  • Department of Asian Studies
  • Department of Classics
  • Program in English for Academic Purposes
  • Department of German Studies (including Dutch and Swedish)
  • Department of Linguistics
  • Department of Near Eastern Studies
  • Department of Romance Studies
  • Russian Language Program

The language teaching programs also receive support from the area studies programs in the Mario Einaudi Center. Currently 39 languages are actively taught at Cornell.

"Currently 39 languages are actively taught at Cornell."

The language programs benefit from being largely taught and supervised by full-time language teaching specialists who are lecturers and senior lecturers. Language teaching across these departments is supported by the Language Resource Center, which provides technology-supported facilities for language learning at Noyes Lodge, collaborates with language teachers in materials development, and initiates events of interest to language teachers. The Center also houses distance learning and audio/video production facilities.
