Cornell University's International Gateway

Financial Resources

Travel grant recipient Steve Lyon conducted research in the Fyris river near Uppsala, Sweden to describe the influence of land use on water quality.

Cornell realizes that it takes more than just offering courses on international topics to truly embrace international studies and advance the international dimensions of the University. It is equally important to provide financial resources to faculty and students to encourage research, teaching, and outreach on international topics. The main source of funding for international initiatives at Cornell comes from the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies which provides financial support in many ways. Some examples of this support include:

  • Financial Support for On-Campus Programs
The Center provides financial support to more than 20 programs on campus that focus on international studies. These include all of Cornell’s area studies programs as well as a number of thematic programs such as the Peace Studies Program or the program on Gender and Global Change.

  • Faculty Seed Grants
The Center runs a biannual seed grant program available to tenured and tenure-track Cornell faculty from any college or school at the University. The main objective of the grant program is to promote research and curriculum development in international studies.

  • Graduate Travel Grants
Each year the Center provides partial funding to graduate students for conducting short-term research and/or field work in countries outside the United States. In 2005-2006, over 150 graduate students from 40 departments have received these competitive grants and are traveling to 50 different countries to conduct their research.

Outside of the Mario Einaudi Center, Cornell provides other sources of funding for international studies through organizations such as the Institute for the Social Sciences and the Society for the Humanities. Both of these groups provide financial support for students and faculty, a good proportion of which include international initiatives or activities.
