Classes with an international focus exist in a surprisingly large number of departments, in virtually every college and school of the University, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Cornell’s faculty is exceptional in its international orientation. Over 650 faculty members focus their research and teaching on some aspect of international studies and have direct research experience outside the United States.

Cornell realizes that it takes more than just offering courses on international topics to truly embrace international studies and advance the international dimensions of the University. It is equally important to provide financial resources to faculty and students to encourage research, teaching, and outreach on international topics.

International Agreements International Agreements
Cornell has for most of its history had a long list of international agreements with institutions across the globe. The University recognizes the value these exchanges have in strengthening the teaching, research, and extension capabilities of the institutions involved, broadening the international experience of the participants, and fostering goodwill between Cornell University and the international community.

International Students and Academic Staff International Students and Academic Staff
The International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) assists individuals and families who come to Cornell from other countries to study, teach, or conduct research. A staff of 11 work to provide information and assistance with immigration, pre-arrival and arrival, tax and labor regulations, and personal concerns.

Languages Languages
Cornell has a prominent tradition in language teaching of innovation, organization, breadth and dedication. Currently 39 languages are actively taught at Cornell.

Library Resources Library Resources
The Cornell Library offers outstanding collections and specialized staff dedicated to international studies. Library collections currently include nearly 1,800,000 volumes, one million of which concern Asia, the remainder Africa, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Outreach Outreach
International Studies Outreach offers Cornell expertise to external constituencies. International Studies organizations on campus offer seminars, workshops, performances, film screenings, exhbits and other diverse programming to those outside the university. Outreach programming allows opportunities for the public to access the rich international studies resources at Cornell.

Each of Cornell’s colleges and schools has an international dimension, but not all aspects of international studies are easily accommodated within the confines of the individual disciplines that comprise the basic structure of the University. To facilitate scholarship and action in cross and inter-disciplinary areas, Cornell has established a variety of programs, centers and institutes.

International projects and initiatives of all shapes and sizes can be found throughout the University. Cornell’s commitment to expansion in this area is evident in the creation of a new position, the Vice Provost for International Relations, who is directly charged with supporting new international initiatives on campus.

Publications Publications
Cornell University Press was first established in 1869, giving Cornell the distinction of being the first university in the United States to have its own press. From this early beginning, Cornell’s printing effort has grown to include a large number of publications that focus in whole or in part on international studies.

Study Abroad Study Abroad
Study abroad is an integral part of a Cornell education. Each year, Cornell Abroad coordinates overseas study for more than 500 Cornell undergraduates during the academic year. Recent events have raised awareness that those aspiring to lead in this country need, more than ever before, knowledge and experience of the diverse world beyond the boundaries of their home country.
