Cornell's commitment to the study of Africa incorporates multi-disciplinary activities in instruction, outreach, and research addressing issues related to food security, human resource development, agriculture, sustainability, human rights, environmental resource management, economic growth, inequality, and public policy.
Asian expertise is in such abundance at Cornell that there have been three separate programs created to support cultural events, research, language teaching, and outreach from the region. The East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia Programs have all been designated National Resources Centers by the U.S. Department of Education in recognition of their history of excellence in their respective areas.
Cornell has always maintained close ties to the continent of Europe. From the Cornell in Rome program, which sends undergraduates and graduates to study in Italy, to language instruction in 18 European languages, to official exchange agreements with universities in 16 European nations, Cornell is intensely involved in the study and research of Europe.
Cornell’s connection to Latin America can be traced back to the first class of the University which included students from Brazil. In fact, there were enough Brazilian students through the nineteenth century at Cornell to support a Portuguese-language magazine, Aurora Brasileira.
The Middle East and its peoples occupy a position at the center of world events and as such will continue to preoccupy the United States in every sphere of public life.
